A former swimming coach at Ben Lomond High School was recently sentenced to 210 days in jail for allegedly having sex with one of her students. Authorities say that the 37-year-old North Ogden woman carried on a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old member of the swim team.
The former coach denies having had sex with the teen but said that she failed to maintain appropriate boundaries with her students.
A jury found the coach guilty of four counts of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse. A judge suspended the prison terms that each charge carried in favor of a 210-day jail sentence and 36 months of probation. The former coach was also ordered to undergo evaluations for sex-offender status and substance abuse.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that there were several irregularities with the coach’s trial. For example, the defense was never informed that one of the teen’s friends would testify that he saw the two engaging in sex. There are also some juror misconduct issues which may provide a basis for a retrial in this case.
